Apple makes some of the best hardware in the world. Unfortunately, its digital assistant has long been one of its most frustrating features.
Siri has been the black sheep of the Apple family. It works well enough for setting timers, checking the weather and handling basic commands, but ask anything more complicated and the experience quickly becomes frustrating. While Apple continued improving its devices, services and ecosystem, Siri seemed to stand still.
Then ChatGPT arrived and changed what people expected from an AI assistant. Claude raised the bar for coding and working with complex information. Suddenly, Siri did not just feel limited. It felt outdated.
Now Siri AI appears to be Apple’s answer.
The new version promises to be more intuitive, understand personal context, recognise what is happening on the screen and take action across apps and information on the device.
But after years of disappointment, better answers alone may not be enough to save Siri.
It needs a reason to exist alongside ChatGPT and Claude. It does not need to beat them at every task, but it does need to offer something they cannot easily replicate. Apple believes that advantage lies in personal context, deep integration and, above all, privacy.
That could prove to be Siri’s greatest strength. It could also become Apple’s biggest test.
The new Siri will have access to messages, emails, photos, calendars and everyday activity. This could make it far more capable than the Siri we know today, but it also raises an important question.
Can privacy save Apple’s assistant, or does Siri still need to prove that it is finally smart enough to deserve our trust?
Siri Does Not Need to Become ChatGPT
One of the biggest mistakes in the current AI conversation is assuming that every assistant is competing to do exactly the same job.
From my own experience, that is not how I use them.
ChatGPT is my general go-to assistant. It is the tool I open first for everyday questions, quick problem-solving, brainstorming and the small practical tasks that come up throughout the day.
Its biggest strength is versatility. I do not need to think too carefully about whether it is the right tool before I start. In most cases, I can open it, explain what I need and get moving.
Claude plays a slightly different role for me. I tend to use it when I need deeper reasoning, more structured thinking or help with coding. Its integrations, including access to tools such as my calendar, can also make it useful when a task depends on information outside the conversation.

Siri AI appears to be aiming at something different.
Its advantage may not be better writing than ChatGPT or deeper reasoning than Claude. It may be that Siri already sits inside the device that holds so much of my personal context.
My messages, emails, calendar, photos, contacts and whatever is currently on screen all form part of that context. A more capable Siri could understand what I am doing without requiring me to upload files, copy and paste information or explain everything from the beginning.

It is also built across the operating system rather than confined to a single app. Apple has often taken this approach with core features such as accessibility, making them available throughout the system instead of turning them into separate destinations.
That could be Siri AI’s real strength: an assistant that understands the moment, works across the device and helps me take the next step without interrupting what I am already doing.
A recent comparison of Siri AI, ChatGPT and Claude reinforced this distinction for me. The most useful takeaway was not that one assistant won every category. It was that each tool has different strengths and fits a different kind of workflow.
Consider a typical example from my working life.
I might receive an email about a meeting at a school, followed by a message confirming that the time has changed. The address may be in the original email, the new time in Messages and the appointment already sitting in my calendar.
ChatGPT or Claude could help me organise that information, but I would first need to provide it. A properly integrated Siri could potentially find the invitation, recognise the updated time, identify the address and adjust the calendar entry without requiring me to gather all the pieces myself.
That does not necessarily make Siri more intelligent. It makes it more aware of the context surrounding the request.
Of course, after years of delays and disappointing updates, Apple still has to prove that it can deliver this experience reliably.
Privacy Is Part of the Product
The more personal context Siri can access, the more important privacy becomes.
Apple’s approach combines processing on the device with Private Cloud Compute when a request needs more power. Apple says information handled through Private Cloud Compute is not stored or made accessible to Apple.
This does not mean that everything always remains on the device. Some requests will need to leave it. The more important question is what happens to our information when they do.
Apple deserves credit for trying to make privacy part of the technical architecture rather than another option hidden in the settings. On-device processing reduces the amount of information that needs to leave the device, while Private Cloud Compute is designed to protect information used for more demanding requests.
But privacy cannot simply be declared in a presentation. It needs to remain transparent, verifiable and open to scrutiny.
Privacy may allow Siri to become more personal. It does not automatically make it more accurate or dependable.

What Parents and Schools Should Consider
It may feel strange to trust an AI assistant with so much personal information.
Parents should pay attention to account security, device permissions and whether children understand that AI can still produce incorrect answers, even when it has access to personal context.
A privacy-focused assistant is not automatically a safe or educationally healthy assistant. Privacy can reduce certain risks, but it does not replace active parenting or ongoing conversations about responsible use.
Schools will face similar questions.
A teacher’s personal iPhone, a managed learner iPad and a shared classroom device each present different considerations. Schools need to think about who owns and manages the device, what information is stored on it and who may be able to access that information.
This cannot be treated only as an IT decision. It is also a leadership, privacy, teaching and digital-citizenship issue.
The starting point should remain the same question schools should ask about any technology:
What are we trying to achieve?
Siri AI should not be used simply because it is built into an iPad or Mac. It should be used when its contextual awareness, accessibility or system integration supports a genuine educational need.
So, Can Privacy Save Siri?
Not by itself.
Privacy gives Apple a credible way to make Siri more personal. Deep integration gives it access to context that a standalone assistant cannot easily reproduce. Together, those qualities give Siri a genuine reason to exist alongside ChatGPT and Claude.
I do not expect Siri AI to replace either of them in my own workflow. ChatGPT will probably remain my everyday all-rounder, while Claude will remain useful for coding and deeper reasoning.
Siri’s opportunity is different. It could become the assistant that is already present, understands what I am doing and helps me take the next step.
But Apple still has to overcome years of frustration and low expectations. Siri must understand the request, find the correct context and complete the intended action consistently.
Privacy may earn Siri access to our personal context. Integration may make that context useful. But only reliability will save Apple’s assistant.
